Structural steel delivery by HIAB is the norm on UK construction sites of all sizes. From a single RSJ for a residential extension to a full structural package for a commercial development, HIAB crane trucks handle the logistics efficiently and safely.
Why HIAB for Steel Delivery?
Steel sections must be placed precisely — in a laydown area, directly alongside the erection crane, or onto steel horses at working height. A lorry with a HIAB crane can drop individual sections exactly where specified, saving the erection team from having to drag or crane materials from a bulk offload. It also eliminates the need for a site forklift or telehandler for unloading, which may not be available or accessible on a congested site.
Vehicle Specification
Single beams and columns for residential work (typically 100–500kg each) are handled comfortably by a HIAB 558 or 658. Heavier sections — 610 UBs, heavy fabrications, plate girders — need a HIAB 858 depending on weight and the reach required from the vehicle parking position.
Rigging Steel Sections
Long sections must be rigged with two-point lifting using certified slings positioned at the quarter-points to prevent bending under their own weight during the lift. We carry a full set of certified chain slings, wire rope slings and lifting beams to handle any structural steel section correctly.
Site Access for Steel Delivery
Steel delivery vehicles are typically 26-tonne rigids or artics. Brief your HIAB operator on access constraints early — particularly on city centre sites with restricted street access or time-of-day restrictions. We can arrange out-of-hours or Sunday morning delivery slots where site access is constrained during working hours.
